Adidas Superstar was originally designed as a low-top basketball shoe in 1969. The Superstar was released as a low-top version of the Pro Model basketball trainer it was nicknamed the shelltoe, or shell tops for its rubber shell toe piece. The iconic design of Superstars became one of the major influences in trainer culture.

On the basketball scene, Superstar Adidas got picked up very quickly. As it was the first low-top basketball shoe to feature an all-leather upper and rubber shelltoe, many basketball players began wearing it, most notably Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Within the first few years of its production, over 75 of all NBA players were wearing Superstars. The move from the courts to the streets was aided by hip-hop group Run DMC. In the 1980s, following the release of Run DMCs song My Adidas, the group signed an advertising deal with Adidas for 1 million. This was the first endorsement deal between hip-hop artists and a major brand. Now, Adidas Superstars are a signature look in fashion, their trademark design featuring the three stripe logo recognisable everywhere.

The trainers are available in many colours, including the famous Superstars white, black, red, blue and numerous other designs. The three stripes are also available in many colours to create a unique look. Adidas Superstar also later branched out from just designing trainers, and launched a number of track tops and basketball shorts as well.
