Inspired by tennis legend René Lacoste

René Lacoste was a French tennis champion and the man who established his eponymous brand in 1933. Born in Paris, he won seven Grand Slam titles during his career, including all four of the grand slams at least once (and in 1927). Lacoste also had an apparel company that produced high-quality knitwear. At the time, it was these sweaters that appealed most to his fellow players; they usually wore long-sleeved cotton shirts and pants (knitted garments were too warm and stiff to wear). The good-natured Lacoste would only play if he could have a polo shirt instead.

In the mid 1930s, he started knitting his own shirts from softer yarns that eliminated those stiffness issues, as well as giving them a more natural stretch. It was the crocodile logo that became his signature; originally intended to be a "water-resistant" branding for polo jerseys - Lacoste would embroider it onto his shirts and suits in the 1950s.
